urban stages: engaging the performing aspect of public space

Fifth-year Thesis Project | Fall 2013/Spring 2014 | 8 Months

This thesis demonstrates that emphasizing performance in a network of public spaces affords a greater opportunity for human interactions and activities. Multipurpose infrastructures with permeable and adaptable spaces can create a flexible environment that enhances human experiences in the public realm.

With the addition of a series of structures that focus on the performing arts and performing artists, while enhancing interactions between the performers and spectators in public areas, the Brooklyn waterfront becomes livelier and completes the activity-filled urban park. Pier 3 becomes an extension of the promenade or fairground that feeds the different piers with visitors. On the ground floor, the main building (30k sf.) serves as a central hub that opens up to the outdoor public area, while the theater (20k sf.) is adaptable for different performances. The proceeding levels in the main building comprise dance studios for a local dance academy that are accessible to the general public enhancing the relationships and interactions between dancers and spectators. This design thesis project creates an architectural network of performance spaces spreading throughout an urban public setting in a densely populated area in Brooklyn to instigate community involvement and unity, while boosting the cultural and social growth of the surrounding neighborhoods.

university campus for the study of sustainable design

Fourth-Year Design Project | Spring 2013 | 15 Weeks

I spent a semester in Rome, Italy and this was a collaborative design project that started with the Arturbain competition which required each group to design an ecological corridor for the Roman street Via Trinitatis. â€‹We then proceeded to work individually on the design of university campus buildings focused on teaching and learning about sustainable design. This building's main purpose is to connect Via Trinitatis to the river and a riverside park along the Tiber.

new media art center

Fourth-year Group Project | Fall 2012 | 15 Weeks

The New Media Art Center is located in East Harlem, NY and it provides spaces for new media art exploration and growth. The idea behind this project is that one enters the New Media Art Center, walks into the core with the most immersive programmatic elements, and is released into the open areas to reflect on the art.  There is also an opportunity to reflect upon social issues by making a connection to the city through new media art.

pittsburgh public library

Third-year Design Project | Spring 2012 | 15 Weeks

The Pittsburgh Public Library consists of a series of pop-outs that provide views to the city as well as creating small pods for users to make their own private libraries within the bigger public one. A dynamic section provides different internal views which are achieved by having different levels throughout the building connected by a series of ramps.

roof park

Third-year Design Project | Fall 2011 | 15 Weeks

The Roof Park is meant to create a public park in the Philadelphia Navy Yard as well as a center for sustainability, where the roof of the building becomes part of the surrounding landscape. The building program consists of classrooms, lecture halls, labs, and offices to educate and explore the future of sustainability.
